Frequently Asked Questions

Setup & Getting Started

Any bright screen worksβ€”laptops, tablets, LED light tables, even smartphones. We recommend our free Capture Helper (this website) for best results. Just open it on your computer, maximize brightness, and you're ready to scan.

No! FilmSnap works with just your phone camera and a backlight. No expensive scanner needed. This makes it perfect for digitizing your film anywhere, anytime.

Color negatives (C-41) and black & white film. Both 35mm and medium format work perfectly. We automatically remove the orange mask from color negatives and have authentic profiles for popular film stocks.

Scanning Issues

Increase backlight brightness to 100% and disable auto-brightness on your device. In the app, you can also adjust exposure compensation. Make sure the film is flat against the backlight for even illumination.

FilmSnap automatically removes the orange mask from color negatives. If colors still look off, try different film profiles (Premium feature) or adjust color temperature in the editor. Different film stocks have different characteristics, so matching the profile to your film helps.

Ensure good contrast between film and backlight. Keep film flat against screen. If auto-detection struggles, try manual crop mode where you can define the frame boundaries yourself.

Hold phone steady (use a tripod if possible). Tap to focus before capturing. Clean your phone's camera lens. Make sure you're close enough to the film to capture detail, but not so close that the camera can't focus.

App Features

9 authentic film profiles (Portra 400, Portra 800, Gold 200, Superia 400, HP5 Plus, Delta 3200, Tri-X 400, and more), full-resolution exports, AI enhancement tools, and batch processing. Premium also includes a 1-month free trial.

Free version exports 1080p HD, which is great for social media and everyday use. Premium unlocks full sensor resolution (12MP+), perfect for printing and archiving your memories.

Film profiles replicate the look of specific film stocks (Kodak Portra 400, Fuji Superia, Ilford HP5, etc.) for authentic results. Each profile adjusts color, contrast, and tonality to match the characteristics of the original film.

Technical Support

Update to latest app version from the App Store or Play Store. Restart your device. Clear app cache in Settings. If issue persists, contact support with details about when the crash occurs.

Go to Settings β†’ FilmSnap β†’ Camera β†’ Allow. Restart app after enabling. On iOS, you may need to reset privacy settings if the permission prompt doesn't appear.

Free up storage space on your device. Check that Photos access is enabled in Settings. High-resolution exports require more storage, so consider moving old photos to cloud storage or a computer.

Account & Premium

Go to Settings β†’ Restore Purchases. You must use the same Apple ID or Google account used for the original purchase. Premium subscriptions are tied to your app store account, not email.

Yes! Premium is tied to your Apple ID or Google Play account. It works on all your devices using the same account. Just sign in with your Apple ID or Google account and restore purchases.

iOS: Settings β†’ [Your Name] β†’ Subscriptions β†’ FilmSnap β†’ Cancel Subscription
